The market is multi-model now
Through 2025 it was reasonable to pick one generator and stay there. That is no longer the sensible default. Bing Image Creator has moved to a mixed line-up that includes GPT-4o image generation and Microsoft's MAI-Image-1, with a notice that DALL·E 3 will retire in the coming weeks. Gemini's Nano Banana 2 has made competent free generation genuinely easy. GPT Image 2 brought reasoning-oriented rendering into a mainstream chat interface.
Meanwhile the specialists have sharpened. Midjourney still owns aesthetic direction. FLUX.2 is often preferred for photorealism and API work. Ideogram 3 is the leading option for readable text in images. Leonardo AI is built around game assets, character design and Realtime Canvas. Adobe Firefly 5 is designed for commercial workflows and approval processes.
Our practical decision guide sets out which job belongs to which tool. The short version: the strongest workflow is usually multi-model.

How we work
Editorial standardsWe use the tools
Every recommendation comes from hands-on generation sessions, not from press material. Where we have not tested something, we say so rather than filling the gap with confident language.
We date everything
Tool reviews carry a visible "Last reviewed" date, and time-sensitive claims are written cautiously. A model that leads in August may not lead in December.
We do not invent numbers
No fabricated benchmarks, no invented market share, no made-up user quotes. If a figure is not published by the vendor or observed by us, it does not appear here.
